Free Eco Grants Including Storage Heaters
As some of you may be aware, the UK government recently announced an ECO scheme as part of its many efforts to help get households to achieve the goal of becoming 100% carbon neutral. These schemes involve a variety of measures, particularly with regard to heating. There are substantial Storage Heater Grants available for households that fulfil the following criteria:
-You own or rent your property from a private landlord (you must have your landlord’s permission).
-Electric storage heaters or electric panel heaters provide your main source of heat, and they must be broken at the tie of your ECO survey.
-Someone in your household receives one of the following qualifying State Benefits, Tax Credits, or Allowances (see below).
If you satisfy these criteria, we would highly recommend filling out this form at the bottom of the page:
Here are some common questions about the Storage Heater Grant aspect of the ECO scheme:
1) Which areas are covered by the Storage Heater Grant Scheme?
The Storage Heater Grant Scheme applies to England, Scotland, and Wales as it is part of the ECO4 scheme. Northern Ireland has its own separate scheme.
The regions of England, Scotland, and Wales that are more likely to apply for the grant are those regions where mains gas supplies are deficient or non-existent; those households should economise on the funding to replace the heaters while they still can.
2) How are the grants calculated?
A number of factors go into the calculation of the grant. These include:
- The type of property you live in
- How many bedrooms your home has
- Whether your home is constructed with cavity walls or solid walls
- How well-insulated your home is
In effect, the better the money-saving measures are for the property you live in, the greater the grant you will be eligible for. This will typically apply to large houses that have multiple bedrooms and poor insulation and will be in contrast with smaller houses, with fewer bedrooms, and better insulation (these will typically be flats, maisonettes, and mid-terraced houses). The residents of the latter households will usually be asked to contribute to the cost of the new storage heaters.
3) Are ECO grants available for other types of heating and insulation?
The short answer is, yes.
In conjunction with Storage Heater Grants, ECO Grants are awarded under the Affordable Warmth Scheme. This means that the grants are available for the following procedures:
- First Time Central Heating
- Gas boilers
- Installation of Cavity Wall Insulation
- Installation of Loft Installation
- Installation of Solid Wall Insulation
- Installation of Room in Roof Insulation (for attic rooms)
- Installation of Under Floor Insulation (for suspended wooden floors)
- Installation of Flat Roof Insulation
In sum, the various aspects of the government’s ECO scheme should be taken advantage of by all households that are eligible: not only will it amount to a more comfortable residence to live in, but it will make significant steps in the ambition for households to become carbon-neutral.
